Ciprofloxacin which is commonly known as Cipro has numerous side effects. These side effects can be categorized into two:

  • • Short-lived and common side effects
  • • Severe Side Effects

Common Side Effects

These are effects which may not cause an alarm especially if you are new to the drug. Some of these include:  side-effects

Vomiting, Diarrhea and stomach discomfort - while these side-effects may be linked to many other ailments, it is important to note that the loss of water through diarrhea and vomiting may be caused by intake of Ciprofloxacin.

Vaginal Itching and/discharge - during the period when you are taking this medication it is common among women to experience both vaginal itching and discharge or either of them. When this is prolonged it could raise signs that the drug did not react well with your body, hence the need to seek medical advice.

The other common side effect is feeling of mild dizziness coupled with a headache. This effect sometimes may exacerbate and cause sleep problems-like insomnia and nightmares. Additionally, the person taking the drug might experience a feeling of agitation nervousness and a feeling of anxiety.

Serious/Severe Side Effects

The side effects listed above are a cause for alarm, and one should be cautious. However when a person experiences the side effects listed below they should either stop taking the drug or seek serious medical attention. Some of the effects are:

Severe pounding of the heart and elongated periods of dizziness or fainting; when this happens, it means the drug has overtaken the body’s ability to perform basic functions like breathing and blood circulation causing dizziness.  

Swelling and Tearing of Tendons: this starts with a sudden pain, popping or snapping sound, swelling, tenderness, bruising and stiffness of the joints. When this happens, you will not be able to move any of your joints which mean that the tendons are in the process of wearing out. Hence it is advisable to seek medical assistance immediately.

Diarrhea: it is important to note that in this case it is not only diarrhea but diarrhea that is bloody or watery, should send alarm that the side effects are severe.  

Seizure or convulsions: these results from long periods of hallucination depression and confusion.

Other side effects include:

  • • A yellowed or pale skin
  • • Dark colored urine
  • • Fever
  • • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • • Lack of urination or minimal amounts of urine
  • • Severe skin reaction, swelling of the face/tongue followed by an acute rash that spreads on the upper body causing peeling and blistering.

All the side effects discussed in this article apply to a normal person. However there is a group of persons who are not advised to try the drug since it has not been proven safe for them. These are pregnant women and patients with myasthenia gravis.
